Redundant Publication

Policy on redundant publication
Redundant, duplicate, or dual publication refers to the dissemination of a manuscript—or substantial portions thereof—more than once by the same author(s) without appropriate citation, cross-referencing, or justification for the overlap. This may occur in the same or a different language and includes both:
- Major redundancy, where the same dataset and findings are republished.
- Minor redundancy, such as "salami slicing," where a single study is fragmented into multiple publications with minimal additional data or analysis.
All submissions to JSDIO must be original and not previously published elsewhere. Authors are required to affirm this upon signing the Copyright Transfer Agreement, which includes a warranty that the manuscript is original, not under consideration by another journal, and will not be submitted elsewhere during the review process with the journal.
Authors must disclose any related works—whether published, in press, or under review—at the time of submission. These should be appropriately cited and referenced. If a publication is later found to be redundant, the journal reserves the right to retract the work in accordance with the appropriate COPE guidelines.
Acceptable Forms of Prior Publication
The following forms of prior dissemination are not considered redundant publication:
- Preprints hosted on recognized preprint servers
- Conference papers
- Theses deposited in institutional repositories
Preprints are increasingly used across disciplines to facilitate rapid dissemination of research. Authors posting to preprint servers should ensure:
- The server clearly identifies the work as non-peer-reviewed.
- Disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest or biases is required.
- The licensing agreement is fully understood, including any restrictions on future use.
- Institutional and funder policies regarding preprint deposits are reviewed and followed.
Submitting Preprints to JSDIO
The journal accepts submissions of manuscripts that have previously been posted to preprint servers, provided that:
- Copyright has not been assigned or an exclusive license signed with the preprint server.
- The submission clearly indicates to the journal editor that the manuscript is available on a preprint server.
Upon acceptance, we will assign a new DOI to the published article. Authors are encouraged to update the preprint server entry with the following notice:
"This paper has been accepted for publication in Journal of Sustainable Decisions Intelligence and Optimization."
Once the article is published on JSDIO, authors may further update the preprint server with:
"This is an original manuscript of an article published in Journal of Sustainable Decisions Intelligence and Optimization on [Date of Publication], available online: [Article DOI]."
Conference Papers
We acknowledge that the dissemination of preliminary research findings through conference presentations and working papers is a common and valuable practice within the academic community. Such dissemination facilitates early feedback, fosters scholarly dialogue, and contributes to the advancement of knowledge. Accordingly, We permit the submission of manuscripts that have previously been presented at academic conferences or made available as working papers, provided that specific ethical and procedural conditions are met.
Eligibility for Submission
Authors may submit manuscripts derived from conference papers under the following conditions:
- Disclosure Requirement:
At the time of submission, authors must clearly disclose that the manuscript is based on a previously presented conference paper. Full details of the conference—including the title, date, location, and URL (if publicly available)—must be provided to the journal editor. - Copyright and Licensing:
Authors must confirm that they have not transferred copyright or signed an exclusive license to publish with the conference organizers or proceedings publisher. If such rights have been assigned, the manuscript may not be eligible for submission unless appropriate permissions are obtained. - Substantial Development:
If the conference paper has been formally published in proceedings with an ISSN or ISBN, the submitted manuscript must represent a significantly revised and expanded version. This includes the addition of new data, deeper analysis, or theoretical development that clearly distinguishes the journal submission from the original conference version. - Peer Review Integrity:
We are committed to maintaining the integrity of the anonymized peer review process. To support this, authors are required to declare any prior presentation of the work in conference proceedings upon submission. The journal editor may request the removal of references to the conference from the manuscript prior to initiating peer review, in order to preserve reviewer anonymity. - Concurrent Submissions:
Manuscripts currently under review by a conference or intended for submission to a conference must not be submitted to JSDIO simultaneously. Authors must await the outcome of the conference review process before submitting the work to the journal. This aligns with COPE guidelines on avoiding duplicate or simultaneous submissions.
Posters and Abstracts
The inclusion of content previously presented in the form of a poster or abstract at a conference does not generally preclude submission to the journal. However, authors are required to disclose such prior dissemination at the time of submission. Editors will assess whether the reuse of such material affects the originality or integrity of the manuscript.
Ethical Considerations
We adhere to the principles outlined by COPE and other international publishing bodies to ensure transparency, fairness, and academic integrity. Authors are expected to:
- Avoid redundant publication or salami slicing, where a single study is inappropriately divided into multiple publications with minimal new content.
- Ensure that the submitted manuscript is substantially original, even if based on prior conference material.
- Provide accurate attribution and citation of the original conference paper, where appropriate, to maintain transparency in the scholarly record.
Failure to disclose prior presentation or publication of a manuscript may be considered a breach of publication ethics and may result in rejection or retraction in accordance with COPE's Retraction Guidelines.
